Sit in a 35°C room for ten minutes. Don’t exercise. Don’t even move much. Just sit.
Researchers who ran exactly that experiment found heart rate variability (HRV) dropped in a measurable, statistically significant way compared to a cooler room - and the cause wasn’t a stress response revving up. It was the opposite: the parasympathetic system, the branch in charge of rest and recovery, quietly stepping back (Abellán-Aynés et al., 2021).
That’s the part most people get wrong about heat. We treat it like a workout tax - something that only matters if you’re outside pushing hard. But your nervous system doesn’t wait for you to break a sweat before it responds to temperature. It’s already adjusting, one degree at a time, whether that’s a commute with the AC on the fritz, an afternoon on the sidelines of a kid’s practice, or just a laptop and an open window.
So what’s actually happening in your body when it’s hot - and does it matter if you’re not exercising, not even outdoors, just living through a normal summer week? The research says: yes, more than most people assume. And a surprising share of it happens while you’re asleep.
Why Heat Moves Your HRV Before You Feel Anything
Every degree your environment climbs, your body has one job: move the extra heat out. It does that mostly by sending more blood to your skin, where the heat can radiate away. More blood to the skin means your heart works harder to keep everything else supplied at the same time.
A 2025 meta-analysis pooling more than 400 laboratory heat studies and nearly 6,900 participant-exposures put a number on this. Across the whole body of research - no exercise involved, just heat - heart rate rose by a median of 27 beats per minute from baseline, alongside roughly a 0.9°C rise in core temperature. The same analysis found that some classic lab methods, like full-body water-perfused suits, exaggerate this further compared to simply sitting in a warm room - but even accounting for that, heat alone still produces a real, measurable cardiovascular workload (Meade et al., 2025).
That’s a genuine cardiovascular workload, stacked on top of whatever else your day involves. It’s also a good example of something worth knowing generally: your HRV can register a load before you’d consciously call the day stressful. You don’t feel “hot and bothered” yet - but the number that reflects how well your nervous system is coping already does.
The Heat Most People Never Think to Track
Here’s the part that gets overlooked. Most heat advice is about daytime: stay in the shade, drink water, skip the midday run. Almost nobody applies the same thinking to their bedroom.
The World Health Organization has a guideline for maximum daytime indoor temperature: 26°C. There’s no equivalent guideline for nighttime - which turns out to matter more than you’d expect. A study published in December 2025 fitted 47 adults over 65 with wearables and in-home temperature sensors for an entire Australian summer, tracking heart rate and HRV across more than 14,000 nights of sleep. Once bedroom temperatures crept above 24°C, and especially past 26°C, the odds of a clinically meaningful shift toward a more strained HRV pattern rose sharply (O’Connor et al., 2025).

Why would a warm bedroom matter more than a warm afternoon? Because good sleep depends on your core temperature actually dropping - that nightly dip helps signal your brain into deep, slow-wave sleep. When the room won’t cool down, neither do you. Sleep-lab research spanning more than a decade shows the result is less slow-wave and REM sleep and more time spent awake - exactly the stages your body relies on to recover (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012).
Humidity makes this worse in a way air temperature alone doesn’t capture, which is why so many of these studies measure something called wet-bulb globe temperature rather than just the number on a thermostat. Humidity limits how well sweat can evaporate, so a muggy 27°C bedroom can tax your system more than a dry 30°C one does.
This isn’t only an older-adult problem, either. A wearable study covering more than 7 million nights of sleep across 68 countries found that once nighttime temperatures pushed past around 30°C, people slept roughly 14 minutes less on average - mostly because it took longer to fall asleep in the first place (Minor et al., 2022). Fourteen minutes doesn’t sound dramatic on any single night. Multiplied across a summer, it’s real, trackable recovery debt - the kind that shows up in your overnight sleep metrics before it shows up in how you feel the next day.
Are You Quietly Making It Worse?
Heat has a quiet accomplice: dehydration. It’s easy to lose more fluid than you replace in hot weather without ever feeling distinctly thirsty.
In one heat-stress study, researchers compared HRV recovery in the same athletes when properly hydrated versus after losing close to 4% of their body weight in fluid. Dehydration alone blunted the normal post-exercise rebound in HRV - autonomic recovery simply took longer and stayed more suppressed when fluid levels were low, independent of the heat itself (Carter et al., 2005).
In other words, heat and under-hydration don’t just add up - they compound. If you’re already running a fluid deficit, the same hot day costs you more than it would if you’d kept ahead of it that morning instead of backfilling water in the evening. It’s one of the simplest, most controllable levers here, and it pairs well with the other habits that keep your nervous system calmer day to day.
The Part Most Heat Advice Leaves Out: You Adapt
None of this makes summer a lost cause. Bodies are genuinely good at recalibrating to heat, and you don’t need a deliberate heat-training protocol to see it - an ordinary season does most of the work.
A systematic review pooling 29 studies and more than 560 people found that after a normal summer (not a training block, just a season), people’s heart rate response to a given heat exposure dropped by 3 to 8 beats per minute, sweat rate improved, and resting core temperature settled around 0.16°C lower (Brown et al., 2022).
That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it’s built to do: recalibrating its baseline the more it practices handling the load. The rough first week or two of a heatwave is a real, measurable cost - not a sign that something’s gone wrong with your recovery.
What Actually Helps, Starting Tonight
- Treat your bedroom as its own project. Daytime cooling doesn’t guarantee a cool night. Aim to keep the room under 24°C after dark where you can - a fan running once the AC cycles off, or blackout curtains that stop the afternoon sun baking the room before bed, both help more than they get credit for.
- Front-load water instead of backfilling it. Catching up on fluids in the evening means your nervous system is recovering from two things at once. Staying ahead of it through the day gives your HRV less to fight overnight.
- Don’t over-read the first hot week of the year. A dip in HRV during the season’s first heatwave is consistent with what the research shows, not a red flag on its own. Give your body the week or two it typically takes to recalibrate before reading too much into a single low morning.
- Move harder efforts to the coolest part of the day, where your schedule allows it. The same workout costs more, cardiovascularly, once the temperature climbs - that’s physics, not a drop in fitness.
A single low HRV morning doesn’t explain itself. It could be stress, a late night, poor sleep - or it could simply be that your bedroom hit 27°C at 2am.
